Bendix Spicer launches reman air disc brake calipers

ELYRIA, Ohio — Air disc brake adoption for tractors and trailers continues to escalate across North America.

Mileage, life and safety expectations are high for the growing number of air-disc-braked tractors and trailers.

To help meet these vehicle operator expectations, Bendix Spicer Foundation Brake LLC (BSFB) now offers remanufactured calipers. The calipers offer price advantages while providing the performance, warranty and post-sales support expected of North America’s leader in commercial vehicle air disc brakes.

“We’re always looking to meet the needs of our growing number of air disc brake customers with quality products, so it makes sense to offer a remanufactured caliper option,” said Keith McComsey, BSFB director of marketing and customer solutions, wheel-end. “At this point, air disc brakes have been widely available in the North American market for almost 15 years, and are factory installed at all the major truck manufacturers. In developing these remanufactured calipers for the aftermarket, we’re combining Bendix’s acknowledged leadership in wheel-end solutions and air disc brake production with the nearly 40 years of experience as a leader in remanufacturing.”

As with other Bendix remanufactured components, the newly launched brake calipers are produced using the rigorous processes and standards in place for OEM components. After inspection and disassembly, used caliper cores are separated, blasted, cleaned and an e-coat is applied. Key components are replaced with new OEM versions, and the calipers are reassembled and quality checked with the identical equipment and standards Bendix uses for manufacturing new calipers.

“Remanufacturing always involves replacing or repairing a core’s components to bring the part up to OEM specs,” McComsey said. “If a company doesn’t have full access to OEM-quality components and production processes, you can’t truly call that a fully remanufactured part – which means you’re rolling the dice as far as what components are going into it, and whether all the proper quality control steps are in place.”

Bendix’s commitment to remanufacturing earned the company a position as one of the first ambassador companies of the Manufactured Again Certification program from MERA – The Association for Sustainable Manufacturing, McComsey said. The program helps purchasers easily identify remanufactured goods with like-new quality and warranty coverage.

Launched in November 2016, Manufactured Again Certification is aligned with the internationally recognized quality management standards ISO 9001 and IATF 16949.

“That tractor out there built in 2005 and equipped with air disc brakes may or may not belong to the same fleet or owner-operator anymore and over the years and miles, vehicle needs and priorities change,” McComsey said. “What stays unchanged is our commitment to helping support the safety of those vehicles and drivers. Carrier Transicold upgrades dealer locator app

ATHENS, Ga. — Carrier Transicold’s free app for mobile devices that helps refrigerated truck operators find nearby Carrier Transicold dealerships has been upgraded with a fresh appearance, a significantly expanded dealer database and helpful new user features.

Now called “Carrier Transicold Dealers,” the app works with smartphones and tablets, so drivers can quickly and easily locate and connect to service operations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and, thanks to the 2019 update, Central America, South America and the Caribbean, according to Mary Udry, marketing manager, Carrier Transicold.

“The improved app now covers the entirety of the Americas – more than 300 dealerships in all,” Udry said. “And for the first time, it offers users multi-language support, enabling the choice of English, French, Spanish or Portuguese. The look and feel of the app has been modernized, making it more intuitive to use, and the amount of helpful reference material has been expanded.”

As part of the app’s expanded offering, Carrier Transicold Dealers now enables access to more operator manuals for current and legacy Carrier Transicold truck and trailer refrigeration systems, heating systems and auxiliary power units (APUs). As before, the app includes a convenient alarm code list for the Carrier Transicold APX control system, providing descriptions of potential problems and corrective steps for different warnings.

The “Nearby Dealers” function finds the closest dealer to the user’s location, including a map, address, contact details and hours of operation. Depending on device and connection, the app can auto-dial the dealership and can help provide navigation to the dealership. Where applicable, quick links are provided to connect to individual dealer websites or to share dealership details via an emailed link to content within Carrier Transicold’s online dealer locator at

Most of the app’s resources require a cell or wi-fi connection, however the dealer lookup menu is available offline – users can always find dealers by selecting a country, plus state or province if applicable, from alphabetical listings.

Carrier Transicold Dealers works on smartphones and tablets using Google’s Android and Apple Inc.’s iOS operating systems. The latest version (3.0) can be downloaded through Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Small difference, big impact: Keeping track of tire pressure

ELYRIA, Ohio — Often in trucking, it takes just a small change to make a big impact. This is especially true in tire pressure, where the difference of a few psi can directly affect mileage, maintenance, and safety.

During Newsal Tire Safety Week, May 20-27, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems stresses that with all that is riding on a truck’s tires — driver safety, operating performance, timely cargo delivery, and more — it’s vital to be sure of the right pressure in them.

Sponsored annually by the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), Newsal Tire Safety Week is an initiative aimed at providing information on the essentials of proper tire care and maintenance.

“Proper tire inflation will substantially impact your tire and ultimately your vehicle’s performance,” said Jon Intagliata, Bendix product manager for Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). “Fuel consumption can increase, stopping distances can increase, and tread life can decrease if the tires run on significantly different psi than what is recommended by the manufacturer — all of which can dramatically affect a fleet’s total cost of ownership (TCO) over the long haul, too.”

According to the American Trucking Associations’ Technology & Maintenance Council, running on a tire that’s underinflated by as little as 10 percent can reduce fuel economy by 1.5 percent. And 20 percent underinflation can shorten tire life by 30 percent. The more miles driven and the more wheel-ends in a fleet, the bigger the impact those few psi have on the bottom line. Underinflated tires also experience increased stress and generate higher running temperatures, compounding the risk of tire blowouts – about 90 percent of which are the result of underinflation, according to industry studies.

Real-Time Info on the Road

“Gradual tire pressure loss can be difficult to detect, and you could be quite a way down the road before you have a chance to notice it at the next spot check,” Intagliata said. “That’s why the best tool for tracking the proper psi on each tire is a technology like the SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System by Bendix CVS – or the SmarTire Trailer-Link TPMS by Bendix CVS for trailers: When drivers get real-time information and pressure alerts, they’re better equipped for safer trucking. Early notification makes all the difference in addressing problems before they become hazards.”

It takes as little as a 5 psi difference between dual-mounted tires to create problems, including irregular or accelerated tire wear.

Bendix uses wheel-mounted sensors inside the tires on its SmarTire systems, allowing the TPMS to continuously monitor temperature inside the tire as well as pressure. This means the system can provide a deviation value showing the amount of overinflation or underinflation from the tire’s cold inflation pressure (CIP), automatically taking into account any increase in pressure due to temperature to provide early alerts of tire pressure issues. Reading temperature also helps the system alert the driver to potential wheel-end issues, such as dragging brakes, and may help the driver mitigate potential tire fires.

Fleets running TPMS-equipped vehicles can also use the system data to shape their tire strategy and maintenance plans by using a back-office system like SafetyDirect by Bendix CVS – a web portal that allows analysis of real-time information from TPMS and other connected safety technologies. Fleets can maximize uptime by planning vehicle service in advance and more effectively address issues such as frequent tire replacements and tire failures on the road.

High Tech, High Stakes

As vehicle safety technologies have advanced and higher regulatory standards have evolved – antilock brakes, Reduced Stopping Distance requirements, and the full-stability mandate, for instance – the importance of tires in good condition running at proper inflation has increased. Moving forward, collision mitigation and other advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) remain dependent upon precise and controlled interaction among the men and women behind the wheel, their vehicles, and the road itself – where tires are the sole point of contact.

“Today’s integrated vehicles mean you need to equip the best set of tools on your tractor and trailer to maximize performance,” Intagliata said. “TPMS can play a critical role to guarantee your advanced safety systems – including air disc brakes and advanced driver assistance technologies – are functioning at the optimal levels.”

According to Intagliata, “Like any safety system, a TPMS is meant to complement safe driving practices and is not intended to enable or encourage aggressive driving. No technology can replace skilled, alert drivers exercising safe habits, or the support of proactive, comprehensive driver training – the safe operation of any vehicle remains with the driver at all times.”
